Relax - it's just cardboard...

Oh, what a happy weekend! Look, what came with the post today – some nice brown little parcel right from Defiance Games in Massachusetts. It came pretty quickly, just eight days after I got the information that it had been dispatched to me.

Yeah, I know it's just plastic... but it's making me happy...

Yeah, I know it's just plastic... but it's making me happy...

Inside I found my box of United Americas Marine Corps Infantry and some nice little piece of paper informing me that the free Gunny will come a bit later… he sent a free sprue of Marine Infantry instead, to ease my sorrows while waiting… can’t complain about that one.

But they're in the centre of my attention - 24 Marines, soon to fight for me!

Anyway, the centre of my attention was – and is – the actual box with my 24 models. I have to say that already the Cardboard box is stylish. I pretty much like the design they used here – much better than what Mantic or Games Workshop come up with.

Even the box is made with care - with bitz pictures and background chatter...

Sure, a box is a box is a box, but I like it when it is filled with photos (including some of all the different parts included the set), description and even some background text. Always a sucker for those…

Sprues, sprues, sprues... and most interesting stats...

Sprues, sprues, sprues... and most interesting stats...

But of course it’s the models itself that count. As is fitting for a company like Defiance Games, it is tightly packed with twelve identical sprues, each with the parts for two marines. The bases included were originally cast with the infantry sprue, but for several reasons (one being that they couldn’t else fit everything in the box) you only get sixteen on the sprues themselves. The final eight come in their own little plastic bag.

Finally you get a colourful pretty stat card of your Infantry for use in the upcoming Alien Wars game. I will probably spend quite some time with that, hoping to find out more about the mechanics of this game…

Thank me? No, thank YOU, Tony! Made me really happy!

Thank me? No, thank YOU, Tony! Made me really happy!

Not to forget that Tony of Defiance Games wrote a personal “Thank You” on my invoice… really, this is all very touching. Or would you expect something like that from Games Workshop? I don’t…

All in all, a great set of great miniatures…

Sadly, it will be some more time until I can write up a proper review of this box… I am right in the middle of some terrain projects I want to finish first… and of course I won’t have access to a proper camera for another month – and there is no way that I assemble those boys without giving you something out of that, too.

Still, you guys from Defiance Games, you really made my weekend! And even without those upcoming hardsuits – with those sprues in my hand I am now sure the UAMC are the right force for me. And I doubt that this year will pass without me ordering something more from you…

Have you already seen the updated release schedule (“roadmap”) of Defiance Games, the makers of Alien War? Fascinating times lie ahead of us indeed…

Defiance Games - Release Schedule

Originally I wasn’t sure if I should really settle for the UA Marines Corps… you know, I was hoping for other armies to be published soon… but when I look at the UAMC Hardsuits (Number 3) and Female Marine Infantry (Number 4), I think I did the right choice in preordering me a box of UAMC Infantry… put in some Bugs (and a friend of mine will take care of the Bu-Bu-Bundeswähr!) – sounds like a solid foundation for a game of Alien War (once they put up the ruleset) or some Warhammer 40K…

Alexander Iglesias: UAMC Hardsuit

Alexander Iglesias: UAMC Hardsuit

I am especially in love with the hardsuits. They have something hilariously unfinished, rough, egglike to them. Even though I love my Dreadnoughts and other miniatures of that kind, I really appreciate it when companies try to do something distinctively different.

As someone on TGN pointed out, it’s a drawing from 2010 by internet artist Alexander Iglesias aka flyingdebris. You can check it out here on Deviant Art. And as the guys of Defiance Games pointed out, Mr. Iglesias does the official designs of the Hardsuits and the Female Marines.

Sizewise, the Hardsuits will be quite small at around 40mm – so less of a GW Dreadnought and more in size with their Terminators… I am looking forward to those more than I do towards the standard Marines… if they end up looking quite as fine as the concept drawing, I will be a happy collector indeed.

Talking about my preordered infantry, my order # 775  has already shipped. I’m looking forward to it, even though I guess it might well take up a week or two until I actually get it…

In the US some guys have already received their Marines and one guy – over at Irrational Number Line Games –  has already put up photos of them unpainted, painted and with some conversions (that is with some skeleton parts from Wargames Factory). Of course I will build my Marines differently – but I do think they are splendid miniatures.

I don’t think I will go for many conversions with my first box, though. Perhaps a new head here and an officer’s weapon there, but nothing spectacular. It will be my first box and I want to test out how many poses and variety I can get out of the sprues as it is.

Well, surely keeping you posted on that.

After a lot of consideration I preordered myself a box of Defiance Games‘ long awaited first kit, the UAMC Infantry.  It was a tough choice for me, for while I do like the design of the miniatures, I originally wanted to wait until they’d release a different faction for me to pick up, like their planned Chinese, Skandinavians or more exotic forces like Spain ot the Vatican. But I guess that would mean a long,  long wait for me, as they plan to release some Bugs and the Bundeswehr next, both factions I have little interest in (besides the fact that my friend Boswell is already wanting some shiny Panzergrenadiers for himself – and who am I to stop him?).

Well, general interest in and sympathy for Defiance Games plus my greed for plastics AND this free Gunnery Sergeant who looks a bit like Crocodile Dundee with a Vengeance settled it for me and I decided to get into the US (or rather: UA, as the official name in the Alien War universe is “United Americas” – with Mexico, but without Canada, it seems). For the time being this seems like the best choice as Defiance Games will surely support their “native” army best of them all… and once they decided to release an army with more appeal to me, I can still switch allegiance…

Besides, this recently released sketch of upcoming female Marines isn’t bad at all (except for the head, perhaps, but we won’t see Marines winning a beauty pageant anyway). And if all things go wrong, I can still pump my UA Marines into my fledging Imperial Guard force – they are always in need for cannon fodder anyway as I play my Guard as a Weenie-army, not a block of tanks…

One of the fine things about Defiance is that they give you as much information, as you like… so until I get my box, I have plenty of material to look at and dream, like this splendid video:

I am quite impressed how many options you get on the sprues, including six heads and three pairs of legs for two soldiers…  I am quite sure it’ll be fun to work with them.

Well, but it’ll be some more weeks until my box will arrive… keep you posted on everything.
